A silent retreat in Brazil is a few days in nature during which participants stop talking to each other to focus on meditation, prayer or reflection. Without the need to speak, explain or reply, attention turns inward, which is exactly what many people look for when their mind will not slow down.

This guide explains how a silent retreat works, the main types, how long they last, what is hard about them and how to prepare, with practical notes for travelers coming from abroad. At the end, it shows an option for those who want silence without spending whole days without speaking.

What is a silent retreat?

It is a retreat where silence is the central rule. In most formats, participants do not talk to each other, do not use their phones, and the daily routine revolves around meditative or contemplative practices. Silence is not a punishment: it is the tool. By cutting out outside stimulation, it becomes easier to notice thoughts, emotions and patterns that usually go unnoticed.

How does a silent retreat work?

The day usually starts early and alternates sitting meditation, mindful walking, silent meals and rest. In general, the only conversation allowed is with the team, for practical or health questions.

The best known example is the Vipassana course. According to the organization’s Code of Discipline, Noble Silence applies from the beginning of the course until the morning of the last full day, and any form of communication between students, including gestures and written notes, is not allowed. Students may speak with the teacher and management.

What types of silent retreats are there?

Formats vary a lot in how strict the silence is and what fills the day. The table sums up the most common ones.

TypeHow the silence worksBest for
Meditation (such as Vipassana)Total, for several days, with many hours of sitting practicePeople who want to learn or deepen meditation and accept a strict routine
ChristianSilence during the day, with prayer, mass and spiritual guidancePeople who want to deepen their faith, often through the Spiritual Exercises
Buddhist monasterySilence for part of the day, following the monastery’s routinePeople interested in Buddhist practice
Self-discovery with silence at your own paceMoments of silence within the practices, with no mandatory vow; each person decides how much silence they wantPeople who want the effect of silence without a strict rule

How long does a silent retreat last?

Some last a weekend, others ten days or more. Short retreats work as a first experience. Longer ones let you get through the first days, which are usually the hardest, and reach a steadier calm. If you have never meditated, a short format or a retreat that alternates silence and connection is the safest way to start. For travelers, it also makes sense to choose a length that justifies the trip.

What does silence do to the body?

Research suggests that silence helps the body slow down. In a study published in 2006 in the journal Heart, led by researchers at the University of Pavia in Italy, 24 volunteers listened to different styles of music while the team measured heart rate, blood pressure and breathing. During two minute pauses of silence, all three dropped below the levels recorded at the start of the test.

The authors read that drop as a sign of relaxation. The study was small and lasted only minutes, so its results cannot be stretched to whole days of retreat. Still, it helps explain the relief many people describe when the noise stops.

What is the hardest part of a silent retreat?

Almost always, the first days. Without conversation or a phone, the mind gets loud, the body complains about the hours of sitting and stored emotions may come up. People who have been through it usually say this phase passes, but it takes patience.

A silent retreat is not a substitute for therapy or treatment. If you are in psychological or psychiatric care, talk to your professional before signing up and let the retreat organizers know.

How to prepare for a silent retreat in Brazil

  1. Practice at home: a few minutes of meditation a day in the weeks before helps both body and mind.
  2. Check the language: many retreats in Brazil are held in Portuguese, so ask whether instructions are translated into English.
  3. Plan the trip: retreats in nature are often far from big cities and may require a domestic flight and a road transfer.
  4. Tell people: family and work need to know you will be offline and how to reach the organizers in an emergency.
  5. Read the rules: schedules, phone use, reading, writing and exercise vary from one retreat to another.
  6. Go without expectations: silence shows what is there, not necessarily what you wanted to see.

How does silence work at the Unah Retreat?

The Unah Retreat, a 7-day retreat from Sunday to Saturday in Piracanga Ecovillage, on the Maraú Peninsula in Bahia, is not a fully silent retreat and has no mandatory vow of silence. Silence comes in three ways:

  • During the activities: moments of silence within the day’s practices, such as sound healing and contemplative practices.
  • In meditation: silence is part of the practice, guided in a group.
  • In free time: time to take in the silence of nature, between the ocean, the river and the Atlantic Forest.

Beyond that, each guest decides. Anyone can take their own vow of silence, whenever and for as long as they like, and many choose to spend most of the week in silence and contemplation. Those who want to talk, talk. No previous experience is needed. The program is held in Portuguese; guests who don’t speak Portuguese have a personal translator for the activities, already included in the price shown on the retreat page. To get there, fly to Ilhéus Airport (IOS), about 2 hours by road from Unah; see how to get to Piracanga.
